Myanmar attack: Omar says 'chest thumping' uncalled for

SRINAGAR: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, Omar Abdullah, has termed the statements about the Myanmar border operation as an "amazing self goal", saying that country's denial that the operation took place on its soil, had proved counter-productive.

In a first-of-its-kind cross border operation, special forces of Army had on Tuesday carried out a surgical strike inside Myanmar "with the knowledge of Myanmarese authorities" killing at least 38 insurgents who were part of the groups believed to be responsible for the ambush on June 4 that left 18 soldiers dead.

However, Myanmar maintained that Indian forces had carried out an attack on insurgents inside India, refuting claims that the attack happened in their territory, according to reports.

"What an amazing self goal! Next time you have a good covert Op, let the Op speak for itself and leave the chest thumping for the campaigns," Omar wrote on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Referring to Myanmar's denial that the operation took place on its soil, the National Conference leader said the statements had proved counterproductive.

"All the chest thumping did is force Myanmar to deny the Op ever took place on their soil thus proving (that it was a) totally counterproductive #selfgoal," he added.
