My security cover has been downgraded: Former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi

GUWAHATI: Former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s security has been downgraded from 'Z Plus with CRPF cover' category to 'Z'.

In 2016, after he faced a humiliating electoral defeat at the hands of the BJP, Gogoi’s security cover was scaled down from Z Plus security cover with NSG to Z plus with CRPF cover.

Gogoi, however, said he was not surprised by this move and told mediapersons on Friday that his security was downgraded because of his vocal stance against the Centre.


"I have called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a Hindu Jinnah. I have said that he follows the ideology of Jinnah and his two-nation theory by trying to divide the nation on the basis of religion," Gogoi said.

Last month, former Assam chief minister and founder-president of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) Prafulla Kumar Mahanta alleged that Centre has withdrawn NSG commandos from the Z plus security for him for opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Mahanta’s security details will now be manned by the CRPF.

Meanwhile, a court in Guwahati sent peasant leader Akhil Gogoi to 14-day judicial custody. He was arrested under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

NIA had sought his custody. However, the court sent Akhil to judicial custody.
