The Maharashtra opposition is up in arms over a move by the government to fill 3,000 posts of police personnel for Mumbai from the Maharashtra State Security Corporation for a period of 11 months. The Maharashtra opposition has likened the move to Russia using the private militia 'Wagner' and said that the consequences could be similar to the rebellion faced recenlty by the Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"We oppose the recruitment of police on contract. This may lead to law and order issues. This is dangerous, what if the police (on contract) do not obey the government orders? A security guard can be on contract but how can a policeman be on contract?" questioned Ambadas Danve in the Upper House.

Outside the house, NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad from the Sharad Pawar faction also said that they will oppose the move as it could have far reaching implications. "First they did recruitment of soldiers on contract and now they are doing it for police personnel. I am sure this is being done with an eye to help some firm. The policemen cannot protest but I am sure that the wives of the policemen should come out in protest against this move."said Awhad.

The Maharashtra government officials have claimed that the move was necessitated by a large shortfall of police officers and constables.
