New Delhi: The government’s outreach to opposition has come from a growing realisation that Parliament needs to transact business, newly appointed leader of the Rajya Sabha Thaawar Chand Gehlot has said.

“The government could hardly transact any business over the last two sessions. We felt that work should not stop. We are now addressing what we felt by talking to the opposition,” Gehlot told ET.

Gehlot met senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad. When asked about the government’s overtures, especially in light of PM Modi’s speech and the numerous meetings with opposition leaders, Gehlot said: “The government’s motto has been ‘sabka saath, sabka vikas aur sabka vishwas’.

We are only going by our motto that we need to win everybody’s trust and take everybody along. Every voice is important.”

Gehlot said this engagement with opposition would not be a one-off move and would continue. “We will do this more — not just with the opposition but also with all other stakeholders,” he said adding that the opposition would also help the government.

“Hopefully, the opposition would also realise that they did not allow the House to run and somewhere even people did not like it,” he said.
