Muslims making into Rakhi business!

Large number of Muslims in Gujarat have opened rakhi stalls in several sensitive cities.

VADODARA: Large number of Muslims in Gujarat have opened rakhi stalls in several cities ahead of the rakhi festival celebrations.

The involvement of a large number of members of the Muslim community in the business of rakhi could be seen in the sensitive areas of Vadodara, Godhra, Dohad, Khoda, Anand, Rajkot, Bhavnagar and Surat in the state which was affected by communal riots in 2002 in the wake of train carnage in Godhra.

But the festival of rakhsha bandhan has continued to present the picture of communal harmony in the state. The festival of rakhsha bandhan has been a source of earning for many Muslim families.

The shops are flooded with different varieties of rakhis to attract the customers. A decorative dish, containing rakhi, sweets and other materials needed during tying of rakhis, is a latest variety to hit the market this year, said Y Johar, a shopkeeper in Rajkot.

The dish, wrapped in a piece of 'bandhani', the famous saree of Saurashtra, would replace the traditional thalis which contain different kinds of materials and sweets. Use of technology is also part of the celebration of this festival which was not the practice earlier. Animated films on rakhis are available in the market, Ahrayas Shah, who made this film, said.

This will enable the girls to convey their feelings through internet to their brothers, who are staying away from their homes. Yusuf Pathan here said he has been into the profession of selling rakhi for past several years. This business yields an annual turn over of Rs five to Rs seven lakh a year.

Rakhis with religious symbols are available at a price ranging between Rs 100 to Rs 200, while a simple rakhi is available at Rs two. Rakhis are available in colour stones also.
