LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Shia Central Waqf Board today sent a notice to liquor baron Vijay Mallya for allegedly purchasing a waqf property in Meerut.

"Notice has been served to Mallya for purchasing waqf land, which is illegal. He has been summoned on August 10 with relevant documents. If he did not comply with Board's order, we will take action against him as per our regulations," Board Chairman Sayed Wasim Rizvi told PTI.

He claimed that Mallya had purchased 10 bigha 72 biswa land 13 years ago in Khurram Nagar area of Meerut from Lala Hansraj and his family for his company United Spirits private limited.

"As per our records, the land was registered as waqf property on April 26, 1918," he said, claiming that the land was leased to Hansraj "illegally".

At present, a liquor factory is running on the land, Rizvi added.
