Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf is expected to leave for China on Wednesday to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics on Friday, and he is likely to meet US President George W Bush.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf is expected to leave for China on Wednesday to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics on Friday, and he is likely to meet US President George W Bush.

According to a statement issued by the country's Foreign Office, leaders from several countries had confirmed their participation and Musharraf would have the opportunity to meet them on the sidelines of the opening ceremony. "The participation of the president of Pakistan in this mega event, and his interaction with Chinese leaders, will provide further impetus to our close and traditional ties with China," newspapers quoted the statement as saying.

The president would also meet the Chinese leadership and discuss matters of mutual interest, and is also expected to meet the heads of several financial institutions and foreign investors. President Musharraf will return to the country on Sunday, said the statement.
