Mumbai: In the wake of a 55-year-old man's fatal fall into an open sewer, Congress MLC Bhai Jagtap slammed the drainage network in the city on Friday, terming the 4,446 uncovered manholes across Mumbai as "death traps".

Speaking in the House, Jagtap said that the metropolis had 1,03,996 manholes, of which 96,383 had protective nets.

"However, 4,446 are still open, and these have become death traps," Jagtap claimed, calling for a detailed discussion on the issue.

Later, speaking to reporters outside the House, Jagtap questioned how many smart manholes have been installed in the city.

A 55-year-old man died after falling into an open sewer in Mumbai amid heavy rains on Thursday, prompting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to suspend four civic officials and form a high-level probe committee.
