Mumbai to face water crisis if dry spell continues
The financial capital of the country may face water cuts if the ongoing dry spell continues for few more days, the civic body chief said on Friday.
"If the dry spell continues for another 10-15 days, it is a cause of worry and we may have to think of water cuts," said Jairaj Phatak, the Municipal Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The dry spell began last weekend after heavy rainfall for nearly a week bringing respite to the city.
Presently, there is enough water available to meet the needs of the city for next 60 days, he said.
According to the report released by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), the level of decrease in the water level range from -0.21 to -0.02 meters.
Citing the example of Modak Sagar lake, the MCGM report said that the water level of the lake in the current year is 147.59 metres, as compared to last year's 148.12 metres.
The Regional Meteorological Department has predicted few spells of rain and thundershowers in some parts of the city.
