Mumbai terror attacks: Wired body raises doubts about fidayeen

MUMBAI/NEW DELHI: Investigators working on Wednesday's Mumbai blasts suspect one of the bombs may have been detonated by a suicide bomber, after finding an unidentified body with electrical wiring embedded in the abdomen.

"The National Security Guard Director-General has informed that a body with a circuit has been found near one of the explosion sites...we are not ruling out anything," Union Home Secetary RK Singh told reporters in New Delhi.

Anti-terrorism Squad chief Rakesh Maria added in Mumbai that it was too early to say anything on the issue. However, Union Internal Security Secretary UK Bansal said that it could perhaps be a person who was standing too close to the bomb and hit by its circuit.

Intelligence agencies had issued an alert a few months ago about the possibility of a human bomb striking at crowded locations. There was no specific information about the location but intelligence agencies had said crowded places could mean religious processions or where there was high-density crowd.

An ATS official said they were alerted by doctors at JJ hospital, where one of the bodies brought in after the blasts had some complicated electrical wires and circuits embedded in the stomach area, suggesting that this could be a wired explosive device the person was carrying.
