Mumbai police not aware of transcript of Tiger Memon's call to family

MUMBAI: A day after ET reported exclusive details of Mushtaq alias Tiger Memon, one of the masterminds of Munbai blasts, calling up his family on July 30, and talking of revenge for Yakub’s hanging, the Mumbai police said they were not aware of the 1993 blast accused making such calls to his family.

But police officials who shared the transcript of Tiger Memon’s telephone conversation with ET reiterated that Tiger had indeed called up his family before Yakub’s hanging. Top internal security officials of the Central government too have confirmed the contents of the transcript.

On Friday morning the Mumbai Deputy Commissioner of Police, Dhananjay Kulkarni issued a statement saying that the Mumbai police was not in possession of intercepts of the conversation. “As some daily reported that fugitive accused Tiger Memon indicated to his family members that he will take revenge and the daily has transcript of that communication. But we want to clarify that we don’t have such intercepted conversation and we also clarify that such transcript is not of Mumbai police,” Kulkarni said.

Mumbai Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Deven Bharti has also been quoted by agencies denying that they have recorded any such conversation. Meanwhile Additional Chief Secretary Maharashtra, KP Bakshi according to reports has asked the Director General of Police (Maharashtra) Sanjeev Dayal and the Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria to submit a report. Meanwhile the Mumbai police have also issued summons to the ET reporter who filed the story on Tiger Memon.
