Mumbai Police Commissioner Satya Pal Singh (59) has resigned from the Indian Police Service (IPS) on Thursday, saying he will join politics.

There has been feverish speculation about the police chief joining the BJP and even contesting the Lok Sabha elections from his hometown Meerut in Uttar Pradesh.

“My inner voice is telling me that it’s time to change profession. As a police officer, I have worked for the people of Mumbai and Maharashtra for many years, but now it’s time to work for the entire country,” Singh told reporters on Friday.

Asked whether he would be joining the BJP, the police chief said. The Maharashtra government announced on Friday night that Singh's resignation has been accepted.
