Mumbai gang-rape: Kolkata intellectuals laud proactive role of Maharashtra govt
City intellectuals lauded the proactive role played by the Maha govt in the aftermath of the gang-rape of a photojournalist in Mumbai.

In the same vein, they expressed dissatisfaction in the manner the West Bengal government responded to the brutal rape-cum-murder of a college girl at Kamduni in June.
"We strongly condemn the ghastly gang-rape of the photojournalist in Mumbai. As citizens of West Bengal, we cannot but compare the response of the respective state administration after the Mumbai gang-rape and the gang-rape and brutal murder of the first-generation college student in Kamduni," the intellectuals said in a joint statement.
"We feel assured by the proactive response of the Mumbai administration while the lacklustre response from the West Bengal government has left us wondering about the seriousness of the administration to give justice. We are also extremely disappointed at the difference in the type of response from the eminent citizens over these two incidents," the statement said.
Among those who signed the statement were film makers Aparna Sen and Shatarupa Sanyal, writer Suchitra Bhattacharya, actor Kaushik Sen, and painter Samir Aich.
