Mumbaikars woke up to the coldest morning of the winter season so far, seeing temperatures colder than the neighbouring hill stations on Tuesday.

Mumbai's two representative observatories— Colaba (city) and Santacruz (suburban) recorded minimum temperatures of 17°C and 15°C respectively, 3 degrees below their normal values. Hill stations Matheran (17°) and Mahabaleshwar (14.9°), popular hill stations close to the island city saw similar temperatures as well.

However, isolated pockets around the city such as Powai and Goregaon saw the mercury plunge to 13°C. The low temperatures will persist on Wednesday, before rising by new year's eve, the weather office said.

"Trend to continue for 24 hours with gradual increase in temperatures thereafter," the Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai said in a statement.

Gujarat saw the start of a severe cold wave in parts of the state, with single-digit temperatures in Kutch, Rajkot, and Porbandar. Ahmedabad saw 10.2°C, while the lowest reading was recorded at Naliya at 2.7°C. The same trend will continue for another day, the met department added.
