LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Tuesday ordered the release of banned terror group Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, who had been under house arrest since December last year.

Saeed, believed to be the mastermind of the Mumbai terror attacks, is head of the Jamaat-ud-Dawa, a front for terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba.

"The court has ordered that the detention of Hafiz Saeed was a violation of the constitution and the law of this country," A K Dogar, the lawyer told reporters outside the Lahore High Court.

On December 10, 2008, the UN Security Council had imposed sections on the JuD.

Government sources in India have called Saeeds arrest by Pakistan authorities an eyewash.

The court had on May 5 extended by two months the house arrest of the JuD chief along with one of his close aides and set free two other leaders of the terrorist outfit detained in the wake of the Mumbai attacks.
