Mumbai attack: Kasab trial opens today

Kasab will face trial through videoconferencing before Judge.

MUMBAI: Ajmal Kasab, the lone captured terrorist involved in the November 26, 2008, Mumbai terror attacks, will depose before a sessions court in Mumbai on Monday. However, its a deposition of a different kind, as Kasab will face trial through videoconferencing before Sessions Court Judge Sahil Ramani.

Kasav who has been lodged in Arthur Jail, Mumbai and is being guarded by an unprecedented number of special forces, will appear before the judge to answer a few questions relating to the chargesheet filed against him.

Among the things that will come up for hearing in the case, is the bigger question is Kasab's legal representation. Kasab had earlier refused to accept the representation despite the fact that some lawyers had expressed their desire to defend him.

Also up for hearing will be the lone captured terrorists plea in court in which he demands an Urdu version of the mammoth chargesheet filed against him. The sessions court had earlier refused to entertain this request but Kasab is likely to file a request again.

Earlier, the prosecution had sought the postponement of the trial from March 23 to April 23 citing security arrangements at the makeshift court in the Arthur Road jail.

In an application filed before the special sessions court, the prosecution said it was seeking postponement as fortification of the court inside the Arthur Road jail in central Mumbai was not yet complete.

The accused have been charged under various sections of Indian Penal Code including waging war against the nation and criminal conspiracy, and under the Foreigners Act, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Arms Act, Explosives Act and Customs Act.
