Mulayam regime catalyst in UP terror growth: CM

UP CM Mayawati on Sunday said the state administration under Mulayam Singh Yadav was indulgent towards ‘jihad terror merchants’ and terror spread its roots in the state because of the SP government policies.

LUCKNOW/NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati on Sunday pointed an accusing finger at the SP and said the state administration under Mulayam Singh Yadav was indulgent towards jihad terror merchants. Ms Mayawati said terrorism has spread its roots in the state because of the policies of the SP government.

The chief ministers charge against her political rival comes on the back of an assessment in the security establishment that Uttar Pradesh has become the breeding ground for terror. Several fundamentalists groups, including HuJi and LeT are said to be quite active in 34 districts of the states districts.

The activities of these groups, security experts believe, are being facilitated by sleeper cells of Simi.

In the governments own admission sleeper cells were detected in Jaunpur, Allahabad, Kanpur, Lucknow, Ambedkar Nagar, Aligarh, Azamgarh, Sonauli, Ferozabad and Hathras. Uttar Pradesh also tops the list for the highest number of terror attacks in the past few years.

During the SPs charge, there were allegations that the administration was not doing enough to contain the problem. The SP had also actively backed hard-line community leaders when they organised rowdy protests against extra-territorial issues.

Ms Mayawati said the SP policies had only tainted the image of the Muslim community. Whatever bad name Uttar Pradesh and Muslim community had got in the recent days for links with terrorist is due to the previous SP government,

Mayawati told reporters adding that the entire community should not be blamed for misdeeds of a few people. Terrorism flourished in the state during the SP reign and Mulayam Singh is solely responsible for it, Ms Mayawati said.

Mayawati said that she would hold a meeting with senior police officers on Monday to review the measures initiated to check activities of anti-nationals. The state agencies are keeping a close eye on the situation arising after the serial blasts in Delhi. I am going to hold an important meeting in this regard on Monday to give certain directions to the officials, Mayawati told reporters.

Principal secretary (home), Kunwar Fateh Bahadur and director-general of police Vikram Singh have directed all officers across the state through video conferencing to take stringent measures against those involved in anti-national activities.

Urging the Centre to ensure proper co-ordination with states, the chief minister said that her government would continue to support the Centre in dealing with terrorism.

The BSP supremo also condoled death of Delhi police inspector M C Sharma and said that the state government would extend all possible support to the family of the officer.

Rejecting the BSP charge, SP leader Shivpal Yadav said BSP MP Akbar Ahmad Dumpy was the first to visit the Azamgarh residence of Ahmedabad blast mastermind Abu Bashar.

The SP leader, however, did not comment on the visits of his party leaders. He also chose to underplay his partys criticism of the ban on Simi. The matter is before the court, he said.
