A wall of Mutha canal near Janata Vasahat area in Pune collapsed today resulting in inundation of the area. According to a ToI report, the breach happened around Dandekar bridge of Janata vasaha, which submerged the Dandekar bridge in few minutes.

Sudden gush of water in homes and the road led to chaos and panic among residents and motorists, which brought entire traffic on the Sinhgad road to a halt.

The incident has brought back memories of the Panshet dam burst in 1961 that had caused massive flooding of Pune and killed 1,000 people.

According to the reports, initially water was flowing at the rate of over 1,400 cusecs, but the irrigation department immediately stopped further release of water in the canal from the khadakwasla dam.

As part of precautionary measures, authorities have closed all the roads leading to Dandekar bridge and the teams of Pune Municipal Corporation, Fire Brigade and Water Resources Department have rushed to the spot move the people to the safer areas.
