Mukherjee discusses N-deal issue with Yechury
A day after the Left parties put on notice the UPA government on the Indo-US civil nuclear deal, both sides swung into action to find a way out of the stand off.
External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who has emerged as the key troubleshooter for the government on the issue, held a meeting with CPI(M) Politburo member Sitaram Yechury this morning to discuss the matter. Mukherjee was accompanied by Defence Minister A K Antony and senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel.
"We are making serious efforts, both sides are engaged in talks on various fronts," Mukherjee said before meeting Yechury. He said the government was assessing the situation and examining all angles. "Let us see how we can proceed," he told reporters.
Earlier, TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu and SP leader Amar Singh spoke over phone with CPI (M) General Secretary Prakash Karat and are understood to have discussed the emerging political situation in the wake of the Left's threat of "serious consequence" to the government if it went ahead with the deal.
Mukherjee said the Congress Core Group will hold a meeting this evening after consulting the UPA allies.
