SRINAGAR: Curfew-like restrictions were today imposed in parts of the city as a preventive measure to maintain law and order on the occasion of Muharram.

"Restrictions have been imposed in five police station areas of the old city as a preventive measure to maintain law and order," District Magistrate Srinagar Farooq Ahmad Shah said.

He said the Muharram procession that culminates at Zadibal shall be allowed as per past practices.

Muharram processions were banned in Srinagar city in the wake of militancy in 1990 due to security reasons. However, the PDP-led government in 2003 allowed Muharram processions in old city areas like Zadibal.
