Muammar Gaddafi dead: India offers to rebuild liberated Libya

NEW DELHI: While India refrained from reacting officially to the death of Libyan strongman colonel Muammar Gaddafi, the government on Thursday agreed to work with France to help the National Transitional Council of Libya “rebuild their country after the sufferings they have endured .”

A joint statement issued by foreign minister S M Krishna and his French counterpart , Alain Juppe, in New Delhi said, “The two countries support the efforts of the National Transition Council representing the Libyan people as a whole, to establish democratic institutions in a free Libya, to promote human rights, and to rebuild their country after the sufferings they have endured.”

France has been at the forefront of the international action against Gaddafi, while India is a reluctant supporter. India abstained on the United Nations Security Council resolutions 1970 and 1973 that started Nato action in Libya.

As fighting continued in Libya, India feared that the country would descend into civil war.

This was one of the main reasons why India refrained from voting in a similar resolution against Bashar al-Assad’s Syria recently.

India recognized the NTC just days before PM Manmohan Singh travelled to attend the UN General Assembly becoming one of the last countries to do so. China was another late supporter.
