Muthu, who entered Tamil cinema in the 1970s, was introduced as a lead actor in films like Pillayo Pillai and Anaiyavilaku. At the time, the DMK leadership projected him as a counterweight to MG Ramachandran (MGR), the popular actor-politician who had founded the AIADMK,as per TOI report. However, Muthu’s acting career did not meet expectations.
Differences emerged between Muthu and Karunanidhi in later years, prompting Muthu to join the AIADMK. Their relationship remained strained until 2009, when the two reconciled after Muthu’s prolonged illness.

Muthu was born to Padmavathi, Karunanidhi’s first wife, who died shortly after his birth. Karunanidhi later married Dhayalu Ammal.
Muthu is survived by his son Arulnithi, who is currently active in Tamil cinema as a lead actor.
