MPs fixing own pays, judges appointing judges unique: Somnath

For Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, it was unique in the world that Members Parliament in India fix their own salaries.

NEW DELHI: For Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, it was unique in the world that Members Parliament in India fix their own salaries.

It was also unique that judges in the country appoint judges, Chatterjee said.

The Speaker made these observations at a press conference here on Friday, a day after the last session of 14th Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die yesterday.

"I still believe that India is unique in three things -- a television operated by Parliament, judges appoint judges and MPs fix their own salaries," he said.
