MP to emerge as a major fish producing state
Madhya Pradesh would soon emerge as a major fish producing state with the development of seven large reservoirs due to the construction of dams on river Narmada.
The major reservoirs besides providing irrigation and power benefits will also open new avenues for the state, especially in the area of fishing, an official release said.
According to the Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute estimates, all the seven major reservoirs made by the Narmada Valley Development Authority (NVDA) would provide cumulative water area of 84,647 hectares for fish cultivation.
A total of 913 square km spread of this reservoir provides 59,029 hectare water area for fish production.
The Chairman and Minister for Narmada Valley Department Nagendra Singh informed that NVDA is moving towards exploiting full fish potential of these reservoirs by providing employment and subsidiary benefits to the displaced families due to the development of these water bodies.
Fishing in such water bodies would need an advanced approach including induction of latest fishing equipment, training the rural fishermen, providing storage and transportation facilities among others.
He also added that fishing activities may provide employment to nearly 10,000 families of the valley.
