BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh government has brought down the rates of wheat and rice at Re 1 per and Rs 2 per kg respectively from June 1, to be distributed to the poor under the Mukhyamantri Annapurna Yojana.

"Madhya Pradesh is the first state after Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu to provide food grains to the poor at such a special subsidised rates," an official release said here on Wednesday adding that iodised salt will also be distributed under the scheme.

"The decision of the State Government to provide food grains to the poor on such special subsidised rates is one step ahead of the Union Government's proposed Food Security Bill," it claimed.

Under the Food Security Bill, government proposes to provide wheat at Rs 2 per kg and rice at Rs 3 per kg, it further said.
