AMRITSAR: Describing as "illegal and patently wrong" Haryana government's move to set up separate committee for managing affairs of Sikh shrines in the state, Jathedar of the Akal Takht Gyani Gurbachan Singh today said the step was "ill conceived" and aimed to divide the Sikhs.

Referring to the passage of a bill in Haryana Assembly paving the way for setting up of a separate SGPC in the state, the head of the Sikh's supreme temporal body said the move will create "unrest" in the community.

He said the Haryana government's action was "direct interference in the religious affairs of Sikh community and this can never be tolerated."

He urged the Sikh community of Haryana to unite and resist the Haryana government's move to "divide and weaken" the community.
