Motorists can show vehicle info on Digilocker

BENGALURU: Traffic policemen and transport officials insist on seeing original documents of vehicles when they stop a motorist on the road. That’s about to change as the Transport Department has directed law enforcement authorities to accept documents presented on "Digilocker".

"Digilocker" is a digital repository of documents and certificates issued to a citizen, linked to his/her Aadhaar number. The mobile-based application, which is available on Google Store and iOS platforms, allows citizens to pull out driving licence (DL), registration certificate (RC) and emission certificates from their Digilocker accounts as the application is linked to the Aadhaar and Transport Department databases.

“The digital copies (which are available) on Digilocker are mandated as original documents as per the IT Act, 2010,” a circular issued by the Transport Department stated. The copies of the circular have been sent to Transport Department offices, the state police chief, and the police commissioner of Bengaluru.


“The notification does not apply to cases where DL or RC have to be seized by the law enforcement authorities as per Motor Vehicles Act and Rules,” transport commissioner B Dayanand said.

The commissioner said insurance certificates would also be provided on the cloud platform shortly. “We are talking to different insurance companies. Once the process is complete, motorists need not carry even the insurance certificates,” he said.
