Putting together a list of proposals sent by all elected representatives is the traditional method of preparing an annual budget of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). There is, however, little or no scope for citizen participation in it.

To facilitate citizen engagement, Janaagraha launched MyCityMyBudget, an initiative to collect citizens’ inputs for budget. In its second year, the campaign received 26,297 inputs, which were handed over to the BBMP.

Roads and drivability was the top-post demand from citizens. The budget report suggests an increase in focus on health and sanitation, better footpaths and walkability, crime, safety, water supply and sewage, lakes, bus transport and storm water drains.


“The first such campaign was launched in December 2016 and we had received 67,114 inputs. Of these, 12,468 (22%) were included in the projects for implementation, costing about Rs 515 crore. Those inputs which were not included last year have been added in this year’s report,” Sapna Karim, head (Civic Participation), Janaagraha, said.
