Monsoon session begins today: Key bills to be taken up

Over the next 24 days, the House is expected to take up 68 pending bills. Eighteen new bills have been listed for introduction while three bills have been listed for withdrawal.

The last Budget Session of the Parliament was the least productive with the Lok Sabha spending just 1 per cent of its allotted time on legislative agenda and only 14 minutes on government bills.
The monsoon session of Parliament will begin today. The Narendra Modi-led government has sought cooperation of opposition parties for smooth functioning of the House as it looks forward to the passage of many important Bills. The monsoon session will continue for 24 days with a total of 18 sittings in all. Over these days, the House is expected to take up 68 pending bills. Eighteen new bills have been listed for introduction while three bills have been listed for withdrawal.

Here is a description of key bills that will be tabled on the floor of the House:

*The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017, banning instant triple talaq. RS to pass


*The Constitution (123rd Amendment) Bill 2017, for new backward classes commission

*The National Medical Commission Bill, 2017, for new regulator for practice and education

*The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (2nd amendment) Bill, 2017

*The Consumer Protection Bill, 2018, to deal with complaints of deficiency in service

*The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2017

Eighteen new bills have been listed for passage which include among others:

*The Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Bill 2018

*The Trafficking of Persons (Prevention, Protection and Rehabilitation) Bill 2018

*4 bills related to Goods and Services Tax

*The National Sports University Bill 2017

*The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Bill 2018

*The Homoeopathy Central Council (Amendment) Bill 2018

*The Criminal Law Amendment Bill 2018 - introduces death penalty for rape of minor girls below 12

*The Commercial Courts, Commercial Division and Commercial Appellate Division of High Courts (Amendment) Bill, 2018 - Cuts threshold amount, makes mediation must before dispute filing
