Monsoon likely to hit Kerala coast in 1-2 days

NEW DELHI: Monsoon rains are expected to hit Kerala coast around June 7-8, the country’s weather office said on Sunday even as farmers have started preparing land for summer crop planting.

In the past few days, monsoon clouds have become stronger over Bay of Bengal and they moved towards the subcontinent on June 3 and 4 after remaining static for some days. Several parts of south and central India are already getting good rains.

In its forecast for the next 24-48 hours, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said heavy rain will cover parts of northeast and south India.


In north India including Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, thunderstorm and dust storm accompanied with squall is likely to occur at few places. The rains are, however, unlikely to make any significant change in maximum temperatures, which are currently 3.1 to 5 degree above normal, over northwest and central India in the next 2-3 days, the weather office said. It said there is unlikely to be any heat wave from June 9. At present, such conditions prevail at a few places in Rajasthan, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.

For its extended forecast for June 10-12, the weather office said heavy rains are expected along west coast and NE states. Rain and thunderstorms are likely to cover south India. There is also the possibility of rain and snow over Himalayan region.
