Monsoon fails Kerala, farm and power scenario grim

The South West monsoon has failed Kerala in its first phase, causing concern to the farm sector, hydel-based power generation and drinking water supply.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The South West monsoon has failed Kerala in its first phase, causing concern to the farm sector, hydel-based power generation and drinking water supply.

Most parts of the state remain as dry and arid as in peak summer, while it should have rained heavily in the first fortnight of June all over Kerala.

As per the mid-month appraisal of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there has been a 38 pc deficiency in rainfall received in Kerala from the normal average since the onset of the monsoon on May 31.

Till June 18, the total amount of rainfall recorded was 23.4 cm against 37.7 cm the state should have received under normal circumstances, IMD director M D Ramachandran told PTI.

The shortfall has been as high as 66 and 65 pc in the southernmost districts of Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam.

Even in northern areas like Kozhikode and Kasargode that received comparatively higher amounts of rainfall in the initial days of the onset, the statistics show a minus trend.

According to IMD, diversion of a good portion of humidity towards the Oman coast by a low pressure off Lakshadweep island was found to have weakened monsoon activity over the region in its initial lap.

But there are scientists who believe that the deviation in factors that trigger heightened monsoon activity over the region could be seen as clear signs of climate change and global warming.
