Moily puts affirmative action garb on pvt quota
A day after the President said that issues would be approached with a new mindset, senior minister Veerappa Moily returned to energetic pandering to the quota lobby.

NEW DELHI: There is bad news for those who expected ministers to live up to the promise in the Presidential address to leave behind the "dreary desert sand of dead habits". A day after the President said that issues would be approached with a new mindset, senior minister Veerappa Moily returned to energetic pandering to the quota lobby.
In an interview to a news magazine, the minister claimed that the government favoured affirmative action on reservation in the private sector. "It (affirmative action) will be across the country and for everyone. In the 1960s, America introduced the concept of equal opportunity and they have the Equality Act. Similarly, we want to have affirmative action here in the private sector," Mr Moily said.
According to the minister, industries in both rural and urban areas will have to introduce quota. "There's no urban-rural divide. The multinationals are following this concept of affirmative action in America for many decades and doing well. I don���t see any reason for not trying it out in our country."
The minister appears to believe that social engineering was part of good corporate behaviour. "There is a concept called corporate social responsibility. Corporates must identify the importance of equal opportunity. They must recognise talent and reward it and also encourage others to come forward," he said.
The corporates have been resisting attempts of a section in the government to interfere with their recuiting policy. The prime minister has been maintaining that quota in corporates can be only implemented after proper consultations with the industry and through consensus.
