Modi, Shah hint BJP will form government in Karnataka

Prime Minister Narendra Modi indicated that BJP will make efforts to form the government in Karnataka and said his party will work for the progress of the state.

Addressing a gathering at the BJP headquarters here after the parliamentary board meeting, Prime Minister Modi said: “This election has affected me deeply. The people of Karnataka gave me so much affection. Their enthusiasm gives one new energy… I want to assure the people of Karnataka that our party will work for their progress.”

He described the Karnataka election result as unprecedented and historic. No party won a majority in the assembly election and the BJP emerged as the single-largest party.


BJP chief Amit Shah also hinted that BJP is set to form the government in Karnataka. He said the Congress is celebrating despite its defeat on the pretext that BJP is short of the majority mark by seven seats. “This is the 15th election (since 2014). BJP has already won 14 elections. This is the 15th consecutive election that BJP is going to win,” Shah said.

The BJP president said even the Congress chief minister lost one seat by 30-35,000 votes and managed to scrape through in the second seat. The people of Karnataka have voted for a “Congress-mukt Bharat”, he said.

Prime Minister Modi said a perception had been created till now that BJP is a north Indian party, although it has won elections in Goa, the northeast, Gujarat and Maharashtra. During the election campaign, Shah had said a win in Karnataka would be the BJP’s gateway to the south.
