Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has launched a 3-day-long 'Kanya Kelavni' in Porbandar district aimed at increasing female literacy in the state.

VADODARA: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched three-day-long 'Kanya Kelavni' in Porbandar district aimed at increasing female literacy in the state.

The drive, Kanya Kelvani (girls' education) going on in the state since 2003, was aimed at ensuring 100 per cent enrolment of girl students and having a zero school drop out rate by 2010, Gujarat's golden jubilee year.

While launching the drive in five villages in Porbandar district, the Chief Minister appealed people to send their daughters to school.

He also asked the bureaucrats to interact more with the villagers and make them aware of the welfare schemes.

Since the commencement of the drive in 2003, there has been a reduction in the drop out rate from 28 per cent to a 2.98 per cent.

The selection of villages to be covered during this drive are the ones that have 35 per cent of enrolment of girl students and higher percentage of drop out rate.
