Modi, Hasina, Mamata likely to pad up at Eden Gardens for Teesta Test

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina bonding over cricket next month in Kolkata at Eden Gardens in the presence of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee could open a new chapter in long pending Teesta water-sharing treaty. Hasina plans to watch the cricket Test match between India and Bangladesh at Eden Gardens in Kolkata starting November 22, ET has learnt, and Modi is expected to join her.

The Bangladesh PM attended the India Economic Summit in New Delhi early October and subsequently met Modi, opening a new chapter in regional connectivity.

There are expectations that West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee may join the two PMs during the match and this may contribute to a softening of the West Bengal government’s stand on the proposed Teesta water-sharing treaty.


Banerjee remains intransigent on sharing Teesta waters with Bangladesh, but Modi had promised Hasina last month a deal in the near future.

Pakistani PMs and Indian leaders attempted to bond over cricket in the 1980s and later during the 2011 World Cup that was hosted in South Asia.

Bangladesh has emerged as a key strategic partner for India in South Asia. At the October 4 summit, both sides inked an MoU to set up a coastal surveillance radar system in Bangladesh and decided to expand the connectivity network between the two countries that will boost New Delhi’s Indo-Pacific strategy.
