Modi govt trying to destroy Nehru legacy but won't succeed: Congress

Congress on Wednesday slammed the government for renaming the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library as Prime Ministers' Memorial Museum and Library, saying it was an attempt to distort and destroy the legacy of Jawaharlal Nehru.

"Mr Modi possesses a huge bundle of fears, complexes and insecurities, especially when it comes to our first and longest serving prime minister. He has had a single point agenda of denying, distorting, defaming and destroying Nehru and the Nehruvian legacy... But he can never take away Nehru's gigantic contributions in the freedom movement and his towering achievements in building the democratic, secular, scientific and liberal foundations of the Indian nation-state, all of which are now under assault by Mr Modi and his drumbeaters," AICC communication in-charge Jairam Ramesh said.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said while "the idea of expanding what the building showcases to accommodate other PMs is an exceptional idea", in the process "it's petty to take away the name of the first PM who led the interim government, who was PM upon Independence, who is so far the longest-serving PM".
