Moderate tremor rocks some North East states

The mild quake had its epi-centre 10 km underneath the earth's crust along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Karimganj area of Assam.

SHILLONG: An earthquake of moderate intensity shook Meghalaya, Assam and some other north-east states this morning.

The quake, which had a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale, had its epi-centre 10 km underneath the earth's crust along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Karimganj area of Assam, officials at the Regional Seismological Centre here said.

The officials said the quake was of "moderate" intensity which lasted for a few seconds only around 7 am and all major towns in the region felt the tremor.

The tremor was also felt in Itanagar, Guwahati, Agartala besides Kohima and Imphal, they said.

There was no casualty in the tremor which caused minor cracks in some buildings in the state capital.
