Moderate quake jolts eastern Japan

An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale jolted Tokyo and parts of eastern Japan on Saturday.

TOKYO: An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale jolted Tokyo and parts of eastern Japan on Saturday, officials said.

The epicentre of the quake, which occurred at 0044 IST, was located off Chiba prefecture in the Pacific and 20 kilometres below the seabed, the meteorological agency said.

The agency issued no tsunami warning.

A 67-year-old woman in Funabashi, eastern Chiba, broke her left arm when she fell out of bed following the quake, while train services were temporarily suspended in the region, local officials said.

There was no report on damage from the earthquake, which swayed buildings in Chiba just east of Tokyo, they said.

Japan experiences 20 per cent of the world's powerful earthquakes. An earthquake last month in central Japan registered 6.8 on the Richter scale and killed 11 people.
