MMRDA to resettle slumdwellers
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has been assigned the task of the resettlement and rehabilitation (R&R) of the slum dwellers that will be affected by the Mumbai airport expansion project.
MUMBAI: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has been assigned the task of the resettlement and rehabilitation (R&R) of the slum dwellers that will be affected by the Mumbai airport expansion project.
“We have taken over the R&R component of this project, considering the fact that we have almost gained an expertise in dealing with such issues,” said T Chandrashekhar, metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA.
The task of modernising the domestic airport has been entrusted with the GVK consortium, better known as Mumbai International Airport (MIAL), which is a 74:26 joint venture between the GVK-SA consortium and the Airport Authority of India (AAI).
“Talks with the MMRDA are on. However, we are yet to finalise the basic details. This relates to the dates as to when notices to slums-dwellers will be issued, evacuation deadlines and further negotiations,” said an MIAL spokesperson. According to Mr Chandrashekhar, the R&R task involves resettling some 1m people belonging to 80,000 families.
However, the going may be less tough for the MMRDA as these are slums, not commercial structures, which are relatively difficult to resettle. “Be it any project in Mumbai, resettlement of slums has become a priority area,” added the commissioner.
However, the MMRDA still has the unfinished agenda of rehabilitating close to 23,000 families under the MUTP, about 35,000 families under the MUIP and more than 3,000 families under the Mithi river development project.
