Those who used to talk about a double-engine govt have been given a double zero by voters of Varanasi, Akhilesh Yadav said.
New Delhi: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Friday stated that the party's performance in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections indicated a possible change of government in 2027, claiming that the results have exposed BJP's weakening political position in the state.
Speaking at a press conference in Lucknow, along with the winning MLC candidates, Yadav hailed the efforts of the party workers during polling and counting. He also invited the losing candidates, assuring them that their contributions won't be overlooked.
"The five seats we won were secured through sheer strength. The six seats BJP won were secured through deceit," Yadav said, accusing the ruling party of manipulating the electoral process.

Yadav specifically mentioned the victory on two seats in Varanasi. "Those who used to talk about a double-engine government have now been given a double zero by the voters of Varanasi. BJP has lost five seats, but it covers 50 districts," he said.
Yadav emphasised that the results were an indication of what would happen in the 2027 assembly elections. "So far, only teacher and graduate voters have come out. In the assembly elections, the entire population of the state will turn out, and BJP won't even know what hit it. The common people will come out to save democracy," he said.
Yadav accused UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath of securing BJP's victory in the Gorakhpur-Faizabad teachers' constituency, allegedly at the cost of the party losing both MLC seats in the Varanasi region, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Lok Sabha constituency. "The chief minister was moving his chess horse in different directions. The outcome was that he seemed to be saying, 'let Kashi drown, but our Gorakhpur business must not stop'," Yadav said, alleging that SP candidate Sanjayan Tripathi was "not allowed" to win in the Gorakhpur-Faizabad teachers' constituency.
BJP won six of the 11 legislative council seats, while SP secured five, two more than in 2020.
