Mizoram extends dry day till March 10, 2019

Committed to its pre poll promise of banning the liquor in Mizoram, Mizo National Front government (MNF) led government has extended the dry day till March 10, this year.

Guwahati: Committed to its pre poll promise of banning the liquor in Mizoram, Mizo National Front government (MNF) led government has extended the dry day till March 10, this year.

Earlier as a prelude to bringing legislation to ban liquor in the Christianity dominated Mizoram, the new government declared dry day from December 21, 2018 to January 14, 2019.

According to an official statement Mizoram government has decided that dry day period has been extended from January 15 to March 10 in view of Republic Day and Chapchar Kut festival and to enable the people celebrate the Republic Day and Chapchar Kut under peaceful atmosphere.


Last year the government banned sale of alcohol by government owned shops. There were nine such shops. All liquor warehouses were closed.

Chief Minister Zoramthanga said that imposing total prohibition instantly is not possible as the government has to bring legislation.

MNF had promised to bring back the Mizoram Liquor Total Prohibition Act (MLTP), 1995 which was replaced in 2014 by Congress despite opposition from Church bodies and civil society groups.

Congress which was ruling party in the state for last 10 years admitted lifting the prohibition hurt the sentiments of the Church and this led to debacle of the congress party in the recent assembly polls.
