Misuse of PMNRF to be inquired: CIC

PMO to inquire about alleged misappropriation of the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.

NEW DELHI: The Central Information Commission has directed the PMO to inquire into suspicions of alleged misappropriation of contributions by employees of South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

The order came in light of an RTI application of Chattisgarh resident Mohammad Muzibur Rehman seeking from the PMO information on amounts deducted from salaries of employees at SECL, Bilaspur, for donation towards various natural calamities and disasters.

In his application, Rehman also casted doubts on the actual deposit of funds raised in contribution towards calamities like -- Latur earthquake (1993), Orissa cyclone (1999), Kargil war (1999), Andhra Pradesh cyclone (1996) and Gujarat earthquake (2001).

"Director, PMO, who is directly concerned with administering PMNRF, will inquire into the suspicions raised by Rehman that contributions meant for PM Relief Fund have actually not been deposited," Chief Information Officer Wajahat Habibullah said while directing it to complete the inquiry within 15 days.

The Commission, in its order, further took note of a letter of the Public Information Officer (PIO) of Coal India Limited which provided details of the funds as had been contributed by its different subsidiaries to the National Relief Fund.

Earlier, Rehman in August last year had filed his RTI plea with the PMO seeking information regarding the amounts that were deducted from the salaries of the employees of SECL towards their contribution to PMNRF.
