Minor rebellion in SP to bother govt

NEW DELHI: The Samajwadi Party, which has promised 100% support for UPA during the trust vote, is having to contend with a minor rebellion in its parliamentary wing. Three to four MPs, whose chances of getting re-nomination in the next Lok Sabha polls are slim, have threatened to walk out of the party.

This group includes Atiq Ahmed, Afzal Ansari and Munawwar Hussain. Of these, Atiq Ahmed has already been suspended from the party. All three are cosying up to the BSP. Their desertion will require the government to mobilise additional numbers during the trust vote.

The desertion of MPs belonging to the Muslim community will help the BSP to communalise the nuclear deal. Ms Mayawati has already dubbed the deal as anti-Muslim. SP leaders here, however, were confident about keeping its parliamentary flock together. They are anticipating troubles from MPs who are likely to be denied party tickets in the coming polls. We will be able to contain the problem, said a SP leader.
