Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment sanctions 28 new de-addiction centres in Punjab

NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment on Friday sanctioned 28 new de-addiction centres in Punjab to curb menaces of drug abuse.

Thaawar Chand Gehlot, Union Minister of Social justice & Empowerment made the announcement while addressing the function of International day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

The Ministry has also conducted a survey on the extent, pattern and trend of drug abuse in the state and a report is expected soon. Gehlot emphasised upon the need of preventive education while stating that Punjab, which is dealing with drug abuse, needs special attention.

The Ministry has decided to focus on early prevention and is promoting a balanced approach that advances evidence-based interventions. The Ministry collaborates with Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan and the National Service Scheme (NSS) for the preventive education and awareness generation programmes.

Regional Workshops have also been planned in other parts of the country for awareness generation amongst youths.

Gehlot also said that the ministry was in the process of finalizing a National Policy on Drug Demand Reduction. This would enable it to create awareness regarding the dangers related to drug use and the need for preventive measures to be disseminated in a consistent manner with special emphasis on needs and care of children/adolescents, women and young girls.
