Minister's absence irks Shekhawat

NEW DELHI: The absence of two ministers in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday caused a major embarrassment to the government after Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat took serious objection to it.

When the Chairman called Shipping, Road Transport and Highways Minister T R Baalu to introduce the Seaman's Provident Fund (Amendment) Bill, 2007, he found him absent.

An upset Shekhawat then asked Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Suresh Pachouri for explanation, not only about Baalu's absence but also that of Minister of State in the PMO Prithviraj Chavan who was earlier called. "I apologise," Pachouri said, only to be retorted by Shekhawat who said "rather I should apologise for calling their names".

Baalu was, however, present during Question Hour and was engaged in heated arguments with opposition over the Ramsetu issue. In the absence of Baalu, the Bill could not be introduced.
