Minister threatens probe over shoddy streetlight work

PWD minister threatened to start a CVC inquiry against 3 cos.

NEW DELHI: Angry over the lax progress in the installation of streetlights and their lackadaisical maintenance, PWD minister Rajkumar Chauhan has threatened to start a CVC inquiry against the three companies responsible for these works.

Chauhan, who went on a round of the city on Tuesday with senior PWD officials and representatives of the three companies, said: ‘‘I have done some rounds on my own over the last two days and what I have seen is atrocious. Lights have not been installed and where they are there, they do not work. The material used is also very poor in some cases. I am now going to refer the tender documents of all three companies to the CVC.’’

New streetlights are being installed along 424Km of city roads at a cost of Rs 198 crore. The three companies given the work are Bajaj, Cashlek Shedder and Spaceage. While both Bajaj and Cashlek are responsible for 144 Km road each, Spaceage is installing lights along 152 Km road.

During Tuesday’s inspection, he directed PWD principal secretary KK Sharma to impose heavy penalties on errant companies. Chauhan reprimanded the superintendent engineers of all three zones where work is on for the tardy pace, urging them to pull up their socks and ensure that the private companies worked according to deadlines.
