TEZPUR: A hardcore NDFB(S) militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in Assam's Sonitpur district bordering Arunachal Pradesh, police said today.

Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of police and Assam Rifles launched an operation in Charduar area late last night and an encounter followed in which the militant was killed, Superintendent of Police Sanjukta Parasar said.

The slain militant has been identified as N Garlang and a pistol with a magazine, four rounds of live ammunition, a motorcycle, two mobile sets along with SIM cards and some cash were recovered from the encounter site.

Parasar said the militant hailed from neighbouring Udalguri district, but was involved in various militant activities including abductions and extortions from tea garden owners in Sonitpur district.
