Milestone verdict in legal history!

MUMBAI: In a country not exactly known for convicting the high and mighty even if found guilty, Sanjay Dutt’s case really stands out. It also offers a case study as to how terribly wrong the parenting can go.

Sanjay undoubtedly was the Bollywood’s most infamous spoilt brat. Drugs extended partying, alcohol abuse... Sanjay was associated with all that which is increasingly taking a heavy toll on today’s youths.

It came to such a pass that Dutt senior had to despatch his son to a rehabilitation centre for drug abuse. The image of a stringy haired, haggard-looking Sanjay emerging from Arthur Road jail, with his father Sunil Dutt, became one of the defining images of the parenting that’s gone sour.

Born to the Bollywood’s most influential, though equally enigmatic, couple Sunil Dutt and legendary actor Nargis, Sanjay initially had a tryst with a series of misfortunes: failed marriages, first with Richa Sharma who died of a brain tumour and then with model Rhea Pillai, whom he divorced, mother Nargis’ death and a fluctuating career.

He was in for further trouble in 1993 when Mumbai police probed his role in the serial blasts, which ultimately saw him behind bars for 16 months. During all these traumatic moments, his late father always stood behind him.

Once out of jail, Sanjay became a reformed man. And his career looked up, too. Hits like Vastav, Khalnayak, the hugely-successful Munnabhai MBBS and his recent sequel Lage Raho Munnabhai brought the best out of the man.

But despite all the success he achieved, he was constantly under the shadow of the court proceedings. In November last year, Sanjay was convicted for illegal possession of a 9-mm pistol and an AK-56 rifle, but acquitted him of more serious terrorism charges under TADA. A bigger relief awaited him when Judge PD Kode pronounced that Sanjay is not a terrorist.

The same Judge Kode, however, on Tuesday pulled him up for his misadventures. Today, as Sanjay headed for the prison, he would be ruing his actions that landed him in jail. Sanjay used to say he takes life as it comes. Today, he sure will wish he shouldn’t have.
