NEW DELHI: In a strong denouncement of the sons-of-the-soil political plank and the recent attack on north Indian migrants by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), Union home minister Shivraj Patil on Tuesday asserted that Mumbai, the financial capital of the country, is the pride of India and people from all regions had contributed to make it so.

While making it clear that no political outfit will be allowed to target migrants anywhere in the country or force their panic immigration, Mr Patil said the Centre and state government would ensure that Chhat Pooja would be carried out in Mumbai.

Chhat Pooja will be celebrated in Mumbai. No one can stop these celebrations. And action will be taken if anybody tries to do so.

All festivals are celebrated by the people across the country and that is the strength of our culture, Mr Patil told the Lok Sabha, in his response to a discussion on the recent attack on migrants in Mumbai by the Raj Thackeray-led MNS.

He asserted that every citizen of the country has every right to go and work anywhere in the country and that it is not just a constitutional right, but part of our composite culture as well.

He said the Maharashtra government has already taken steps against those who indulged in recent violence and added that the Centre would intervene, if necessary. Whatever is necessary is being done by the state government. If they fail to do it, the Centre will tell them to do so, he added.
