Mexican president arrives in India
Mexican leader Felipe Calderon arrived in India Monday for a three-day visit focused on trade between the two emerging economies.
After a visit to the memorial of Indian independence icon Mahatma Gandhi early Monday, Calderon headed to a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Mexican embassy said.
"We expect good results from this visit," said Guillermo Puente Ordorica, Mexican embassy press secretary in New Delhi, ahead of the first visit of a president from the Latin American country to India in over two decades.
"We are two countries with many points in common with many social and historical similarities and with complementary economic interests."
Calderon is accompanied by the Mexican ministers for foreign affairs and economics, as well as a business delegation of over 100 people, a statement from India's Ministry of External Affairs said.
The Mexican leader will meet representatives of Indian trade and industry on Monday with both countries looking to expand their economic ties.
"Trade between India and Mexico has been growing rapidly in recent years," the Indian foreign ministry said, adding the first meeting of a high-level group to foster trade and investment between the countries would be held on Monday.
"Bilateral relations are now being re-energised and cooperation being expanded."
The two countries also expect to sign an extradition treaty and a double-taxation avoidance agreement.
